Registrations open for the 2011 Living Lake, Changing Catchment symposium

It’s time to register for the third Living Lake (and catchment) symposium, hosted by WET and to be held at Lincoln University on Tuesday November 15th and Wednesday November 16th.  A field trip will follow on Saturday November 19th to some key sites of interest around the Lake and catchment.

Day 1 will feature updates on biophysical, cultural, social and economic aspects of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere, and will include presentations on recent science and research.

Day 2 will begin with the keynote address from Professor David Hamilton of Waikato University and have more of a focus on management and governance of the catchment.

The afternoon of day 2 will cover new initiatives under the Canterbury Water Management Strategy and a presentation about the Selwyn-Waihora Zone Implementation Programme. This session is free to attend but registration is required.

Support from Environment Canterbury, Ngai Tahu, Lincoln University, Meridian, Department of Conservation, Selwyn District Council, Fish & Game NZ, Canterbury Community Trust, Fonterra  and NIWA has allowed us to keep the registration fees to a minimum. There are great concessions* for WET members, so if you aren’t already a member this is a good opportunity to join us.

*A maximum of one concessionary registration per membership is available, regardless of membership type

2011 Lincoln University State of the Nation’s Environmental Address

This year’s State of the Nation’s Environment Address at Lincoln University is taking place on Wednesday 14th September, 5.00pm in Stewart Lecture Theatre 1.

Professor Bob Evans from the School of Social Science, University of Waikato will present: “Fair shares, self interest and environmental planning, will New Zealand cope with the challenges of the 21st century?

Canterbury Plantout 2011!

If you would like to find out more about the indigenous biodiversity of the plains and lend a hand then register for the first annual Community Plantout weekend is being held on September 10th and 11th 2011.

Transport and meals will be provided, and there will be experts on hand to talk about the projects and ecology. Planting will take place at a number of sites over two days and the first day will end with a hangi and entertainment.

Registration is required before September the 7th, and you can register for one or both days by visiting www.kakariki.org.nz, the Te Ara Kakariki website.

Symposium 2011

Symposium 2011

November 15th and 16th at Lincoln University

Following the very successful symposia of 2007 and 2009, planning is now underway for a symposium later this year with a focus on Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere and the wider catchment.

The event will be held over 2 days. The first day will have a focus on research and information sharing, with a series of short presentations on a wide range of topics. Day 2 will focus more on the governance and management of the Lake and catchment and the way forward.

A programme and registration details will be available nearer the time. This information will be sent out to newsletter subscribers so please subscribe if you would like to receive updates.

WET Trustee Meeting

The next WET Trustee meeting for 2011 will be held on Monday 18th July, 6.30pm, at Lincoln Events Centre, Lounge 3.

A key agenda item will again be be the review of the Community Strategy and the development of an action plan to guide WET’s future activities.  All welcome.

Lake Level Management talk

WET is hosting an evening talk about the management of the Lake level.  The speaker is David Aires from Environment Canterbury.

WHEN: Wednesday April 6th, 2011 at 7pm

WHERE: Leeston Community Room (Leeston Library) 19 Messines St, Leeston – look out for the WET flag at the entrance.

There is no charge for this event and there will be tea/coffee available.  We hope to see you there.

Celebrating Selwyn

As part of ‘Celebrating Selwyn’ 2011 WET will have a display and information at Leeston Library from March 25th to April 10th – come along and find more about what WET is doing.

On April 6th, also at Leeston Library, WET is hosting an evening talk on Lake Level Management. The level of the Lake has been artificially managed since pre-European times and David Aires from ECan will talk about how the Lake is managed today.

There is no charge for this event – come along at 7pm.
